OF "DOCTOR AND MINE" AND COP IN THE PARA

We made a huge effort to internationalize Minas Gerais in the late 90s. It was a gigantic effort in the Hélio Garcia and Eduardo Azeredo governments. Thus, it was essential to bring international events and for that count on Itamaraty. One of the events was the first meeting of Mercosur and EU trade ministers at the Ouro Minas hotel. I was then accompanying Chancellor Felipe Lampreia entering the hotel, when we heard the doorman calling us and saying, "doctor and mine?" Ambassador Lampreia, in a good mood, just said, Šalej, you are done with this internationalization agenda. Well, then came the FTAA meeting, thanks to our boldness and the good offices of Ambassador Paulo Tarso Flexão de Lima. We were accused, by the way, in a fair way, of not having the structure for an event of this magnitude. We really didn't have it and the fire still happened at the Palácio das Artes. But, we built ExpoMinas, and BH was the stage for many events, such as the annual meeting of the IDB, came the Itamaraty Office and the Estrada Real and even Confins Airport began to have more and more international flights.

Seeing these days the controversy about the ability of the city of Belém to hold the United Nations climate conference, COP30, the doorman's phrase for Chancellor Lampreia gains enormous meaning. She says about the hope of humble people that these events will bring benefits to them. In other words, it is not only the hotelier who will win, the doorman also has the right. The events bring enormous economic benefits, as long as they are part of a development project and not simply an event of gigantic proportions, such as COP30, with 50,000 participants, but which is not part of a development project.

One of the characteristics of the events that changed the image of BH at the time was that the events were part of a development plan led by entrepreneurs, in partnership with the government. And politicians, senators and deputies, amazingly. And the win-win goal was clear to everyone. And more, it didn't have any roll, as they say in the popular. And it had continuity, with more or less success, but it didn't stop at an event.

The good organization of an international event must be Itamaraty standard, 100% as was for example the first climate conference, RIO 92, is also fundamental to the success of the event content. Negotiations in general are time-consuming, tense, crossing nights and the least you expect is to have a good bed to sleep in.

Brazil as a country has a lot of experience in this matter. This year there have already been meetings of the G20, BRICS, MERCOSUR presidency and the people of Pará were honored with COP30, the largest of events. They are expected not to stain with "cadê o meu doutor", the image of all Brazilians.
