 FROM THE CUP TO CEUTA

The celebrations of the conquest of the World Cup by Spain and the good performance of Morocco, which will be one of the hosts of the next World Cup, lasted a short time. In Spain, fires are spreading and, as if that were not enough, 75,000 Moroccans invaded a Spanish enclave in Moroccan territory at the end of July. Ceuta, Spanish territory in Moroccan land, along with another city, Melilla, remnants of colonial history, but fundamental for the control of Gibraltar, a naval door from Europe to the world.

The invasion took place on the day of the annual celebration of the accession to the throne of King Mohamed VI of Morocco and to the total surprise of the Spaniards. The fact was the repetition of invasion in 2021, but much greater. Why did thousands invade a Spanish enclave, without reaction from the Moroccan police? The Spanish Supreme Court decided that the administration is obliged to give asylum to illegal emigrants coming by sea. On the other hand, while other European countries, not to mention the US, are restricting immigration, Spain is legalizing 500,000 immigrants and having a very liberal policy. And the news that the doors are open has spread through TikTok, Instagram and others. Who spread the news, no one knows and there is even suspicion that everything was organized. Or by some country or by drug traffickers who dominate that area.

The European Union, which began the new immigration pact in June, based on solidarity and border control, trembled. Italy closed its borders with Spain, several countries protested against Spanish negligence, and the EU cracked. In the middle of the week, the spirits calmed down, 70,000 returned to Morocco, 85 died, but the fright of the invasion of illegal immigrants fell in the middle of the summer of Europe.

For Brazil, Morocco is an important supplier of phosphates, more than 1.5 billion dollars a year, but the migration crisis in Europe only hits when they hit Brazilians, as the Spaniards already did in 2018, at Barajas airport or when Vini Jr. is often cursed in Spanish stadiums. While 10% of Moroccans live abroad and send 12 billion dollars to the country, 8% of GDP, in Spain 20% of the population is foreigners and without them the GDP may fall 19% by 2050.

Population aging in Europe, lack of labor, in Slovenia they are hiring Filipinos and Nepalese, rejection of Catholic populations to Muslim immigrants, humanitarian crisis and wars in Africa, lack of employment, as in Morocco, among others, are strengthening anti-migration movements and strengthening the extreme right in Europe. And then, the need for labor, demographic change and human rights create challenges there, but without realizing that it exists here too. But neither there nor here know how to solve it. Not to mention our neighbor in the north of the continent.

FROM THE BOOM OF DATA CENTERS

Receiving billionaire investments in data centers has become almost obsessed with mayors in Brazil. Without a doubt, with the exponential growth of the use of the internet and its tools, including artificial intelligence, the expansion of the infrastructure that processes trillions of data in the cloud is a must of our era. If the data centers that store and process this data are not expanded, and so is the indispensable infrastructure, the world simply stops. Not only TikTok, but Pix, banking and commercial transactions, air traffic and everything else. We are not only in the dark, but we returned to the era of writing letters, as well described in his novel "La Silla del Águila", the eagle's chair, the Mexican Carlos Fuentes, more than 30 years ago.

Investments in data centers, according to the McKinsey consultancy, add up to 7 trillion dollars worldwide by 2030. Most of these investments will be in the United States, Europe and China. But they will also be made in countries like Brazil. The basic characteristic of data centers is the use of sophisticated processing equipment, which few produce, extensive use of energy and water. A data center like the one TikTok built in Ceará will consume daily water equal to 2.2 million people. A small center that consumes 50 MW of electricity could supply a city of 50,000 inhabitants. In other words, to have data centers we need electricity and water. And then the big discussion begins.

Do we have enough energy and enough water? In the effort to obtain the investments, mayors and governors boast of receiving billionaire investments in their area, but the calculations on the tip of the pencil are not well done. First you have to guarantee water and energy for the population. Second, all calculations around the world show that data center facilities, which require energy networks that are generally technically and physically aged, and sometimes distant, increase the price of energy by up to 30%. And the water too. To compensate for this, data centers are not built without a huge package of tax and tax incentives. In Brazil, the legislation that defines rules is underway, REDATA, stopped in the Senate. Most investors are large technology companies, whose bargaining power exceeds that of the states. Ecologists, who add noise to the disadvantages, managed to get 18 US states to ban the installation of data centers.

In Brazil, it is better to have them here, than only in other countries, even if we only participate in the basic investment, because the operation requires little, but qualified, labor. And the calculation must be made, if incentives are given, of what goes back to the state, because what goes back to the investor is clear. It has to have data centers, but with well-calculated reciprocal cost and benefits.

E aí começa a grande discussão.

Temos energia suficiente e temos água suficiente?

OF THE REALITY OF THE TARIFF AND OUR WEAKNESS

The discussion about the US tariff turned, after the thunderous defeat of our team in the World Cup, a national sport. The number of experts who have emerged, who have never produced a nail and much less exported anything, except those who went to Disney, is impressive. And the theme became a debate among politicians intending to have higher positions, without framing the theme in their government program under the title of development and foreign policy with an emphasis on economic relations. If the North American decision was political, with economic effects, even with an exception for 2300 items, then the answer, so think the wise people around here, has to be political.

In crises it is always easier to find an opponent and blame him than to analyze the situation and solve it. Blaming Trump, who does want to have dominion over Brazil, unifying Latin America under his baton, is part of our problem. In fact, his policy is nothing new, nor his attitudes. I have my doubts about how many people in Brazil have read the latest book by NYT reporter Maggie Haberman, Regime change, which explains well how the American government works. And see the case of Canada, which took more tariffs these days. What's more, let's ask ourselves how important we really are to the USA, which currently has conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine, etc.

The tariff affects the country, but above all it affects companies. And as for retaliation, just remember an old commercial truth: you don't fight with a customer, especially if he is stronger than you. And does anyone have any doubts about who the customer is and his size? We are being deceived by the discussion of the government and the opposition on the subject. The debate should be about our productive base and its ability to compete in these scenarios. Agro in financial difficulties and with El Niño knocking on the door. Uncompetitive industry and interest at the heights, in addition to the overvalued real. Solving situations like these with loans and high interest is to make the situation worse.

Diversification of markets, in which, through Apex, billions are invested, depends on the effort of companies, not only on agreements and government action. If honey producers decide to sell 85% of their export to a single customer, they must also take the risk. A ton of honey costs 3,350 dollars and steel, 600. The government in the crisis can help, but the key is in the company. Our companies, of course there are exceptions, are more motivated to export by buyers than by an expansion strategy. By the way, we are also experiencing this situation with China. And with diversification we have to develop the Brazil brand, we lose in coffee, and brands of the exporters themselves. And then, only in the long term and with a lot of investment and work. Less politics and tears and more sweat with work.

OF THE MISFORTUNE PROVOKED AND IGNORED

At the moment, as it should be in a country with an educated elite, we are worried about the infernal heat in European countries, such as Spain, France, Greece, among others, and in the United States, where in the World Cup they take an intermediate break to refresh the players while throwing water on the lawn. In summary, in the northern hemisphere the infernal heat, as the cyclists of the Tour de France also say, and the fires, as in the vicinity of Paris, where 2000 ha of one of the most beautiful parks in France, Fontainebleau, were destroyed. In Spain, the fires also caused destruction and deaths.

For some, the misfortune of others is refreshment and the most fierce nationalists in Brazil even say that this is good for us who are grown up and nothing affects us, on the contrary we can only benefit. Total deception, because according to the study sponsored by FAPESP, a São Paulo research funding agency, nine out of ten Brazilian cities have been affected in recent years by climate disasters. Thus, 92% of Brazilian municipalities suffered. And 130 million people, more than half of the Brazilian population, were affected and almost five thousand people died. The economic loss, not to mention social, exceeded 124 billion dollars or 620 billion reais.

Eight months ago, the news of the day was the COP, climate conference in Belém. Does anyone even remember what was decided there, or rather what was not decided? The world today no longer puts the climate issue as a priority. Governments have relaxed environmental standards, starting with the world's biggest polluters, the United States and China, and we are in a save yourself who can. Climate disasters affect the population and the economy as a whole. It is false to say that agriculture will be the most affected. The cities are being destroyed, the glaciers of Switzerland are melting, and groundwater is increasingly scarce. The so-called energy transition was not enough to stop the changes.

In our region we still have this year the El Niño phenomenon, which deeply affects the rains and dry periods, fundamental for the agricultural sector. Well, from disasters we are great, from government failure both in the formulation of relief policies and in prevention, too. No one is discussing investment in infrastructure, not only in Brazil, it is also worn out and without maintenance, for example in Germany and the United States, to avoid deaths and all losses. And in Brazil, it is arguing even less in the campaign about what to do in the future.

At the level of natural disaster prevention, we have a good technical and scientific infrastructure. Now, relying only on the state will not be enough.

 250 FOURTH OF JULY

No one in this world, in one way or another, has stopped being touched by the United States. Be it product, service, invention, technology, music, movie. Some, like the two million Brazilians who live there, even more so. The American dream. America.

I lived this, a seven-year-old boy, just out of the reformatory for children of the enemies of Yugoslav socialism, when I won, in the first year of primary school, an award for the best text in the class. A pencil with colors and stars of the American flag, with eraser. And later at school, sandwiches with yellow cheese, coming in crates marked with the American flag. Or a movie teaching us how to brush our teeth. And my farewell to Yugoslavia to the sounds of Glenn Miller's band, Pennsylvania 56000.

Exactly 250 years ago the United States of America was founded. A republic, still a slave for a hundred years, whose foundations are based on democratic and republican values that the world of the time, dominated by imperial and imperialist monarchies, did not know. A new country was not founded, but a new model of political and economic management that represented on the one hand a beacon for changes and at the same time a danger to the status quo. The paths traveled not only by territorial consolidation, but above all by political consolidation, had mishaps that, even with the civil war in the country itself, cost many lives. But the United States of America has not only survived, but has consolidated itself as the greatest democratic power in this world in which we live.

According to the British magazine The Economist, it was thanks to the freedom to innovate and undertake, and the solidity of its institutions, that the country achieved this position. A university and educational system supported by advances in research that, associated with a risky economic system, taking advantage of academic results, consolidated the country's leadership not only in production, but in global trade. And there was another important element: immigration. Strong hands and privileged intellects, open doors to lead innovation.

The US does not have colonies, unlike, for example, France, which still has territories such as French Guiana, but has influence through cultural and political soft power, without comparison with any other country. His military interventions, such as participation in the two world wars in the last century, support for coups in Latin America, or the conflict in Korea and Vietnam, and so many more examples, show another face of this leadership of the democratic world.

The 250 years have to be analyzed as a whole, not only by today's events and actions. And especially from the perspective of the future. What would the world be like today if the United States of America had not been founded? And the leadership that was conquered was not manu militari, but by the solidity of its democracy and its institutions, which were and, we must believe, are also today, capable of correcting its deviations and creating conditions of cooperation and peace. We also have no better alternatives in the Western world than this. What forces us on this anniversary for which the American people deserve congratulations, to also be more democratic in our relations. The Republic we celebrate today is not tomorrow's empire.

 250 FOURTH OF JULY

FROM EUROPE TO BRAZIL (from Ljubljana, Berlin, Paris)

With a temperature of 40 degrees C, the buses without air conditioning, a cracking sun, the salvation are the Parisian museums such as the exhibition of Matisse and Caldear, among others, but so crowded with visitors that it is not known where it is warmer, inside or outside. But, unmissable. The World Cup with schedules for Europeans not to wake up early, excites, scares by the unexpected results, but definitely Brazil is only a star for the individual players who play or played here, and yield publicity. But the Canarian national team is not the great hope. Not even a canary is anymore.

Even with the summer burning, in addition to the white skins of bathers, the burning forests, European politics does not sleep. In France, the presidential elections next year determine the actions now. The G 7 meeting in Versailles was a Trump show about the "end of the war" with Iran. And nothing usable about the state of the world economy shaken by the conflict, which apparently calmed the oil markets, but left sequelae not yet measured, including for emerging countries. A conflict that only left losers, but deep down it seems that not even in 49 years of Shiite regime in Iran the Western world has managed to find a balance in its relations, nor will it find it in the next 50. Simply, it is not that the government of the Iranian clergy is strong by itself, in part yes, but mainly because in the geopolitical game it suits some countries, that it has been so and so be. And damn Israel, now enfant terrible, defending itself (can we understand it like that?), destroying Southern Lebanon. Gaza still in conflict, Ukraine with more war intensity, conflicts in Africa.

Oh, it's worth seeing the movie De GAULLE, about how the General fought to keep France, invaded by the Germans and divided, part of the government in Vichy, allied to the Nazis, with the country fighting for its freedom. It is a lesson in geopolitics, which applies well to how the powers act within, and only within their interests. Real politics, raw, naked and cruel.

While the film shows a United Kingdom under the leadership of Churchill, resistant and fighting against Hitler, this Empire, this week, changed its Prime Minister for the eighth time in ten years. The Prime Minister of Italy, who used to change heads of government as those who change shirts, in power since 2022, saw four British colleagues pass in front of her. And in this wave of political and economic instability, it has been ten years since the island left the European Union, reaching the conclusion that it was a strategic mistake, which only weakened the old world power.

And the victory of the right in Colombia and Peru, radical changes in the Cuban economy, only lead to a question here, and how is Brazil.

 OF THE 66 YEARS BRAZILIANS

On June 9, 1960, we landed at the Port of Rio Pier, my mother, my 12-year-old sister and I, 16 years old. After 11 years in prison, re-education and adaptation to socialist life in Yugoslavia, we found my father. We were strangers, my sister was one year old, I was five, when he fled from Yugoslavia to Italy. And the country, which had just inaugurated Brasília, in the middle of the presidential campaign at the end of JK's term, with Jânio's brooms, was boiling. But, it was the family reunited, with their dreams of a family life and freedom, to study, to move forward in life. We were in Amerika, every emigrant's dream.

This Tuesday when I was received by Prime Minister Janez Janša, in his fourth non-consecutive term at the head of the Slovenian government, he passed me the film of how these sixty-six years of immigrants from Minas Gerais were, and now from São Paulo, but Brazilian. I never stopped being Slovenian, Jewish, I never stopped doing everything to make Slovenia a democratic and prosperous country. The fight for his independence, today celebrating 35 years, was arduous and the current Prime Minister was one of those who fought with weapons for this independence. But, I'm reassured that I did my part. Brazil was one of the first countries to recognize Slovenia's independence.

Always working for the development of relations between the two countries was natural. Tuesday's conversation was in this direction and in particular about the Mercosur-EU agreement. The fear of Europeans for the import of agricultural products is impressive, but also the opportunity to sell manufactured products is more than clear. This is the great opportunity for Europe, which lags behind China, to move forward through the most intense trade and thus also develop more in the technological field.

Examining my life, especially nowadays happy, I would say that I made my dreams come true. Not because of the positions I occupied, but essentially because of the opportunity to be able to work and do something useful. Whether it's Tecnowatt products, relays and lamps, the people who worked with us and advanced in life, whether in business entities, especially SEBRAE, with managerial schools, and projects such as Cresce Minas, Estrada Real, Volunteer Day, interiorization and the quality and advanced schools of SESI and SENAI. And also to have the opportunity to contribute with diplomatic work in Slovenia and then with the foundation of an entity that brings together Slovenian entrepreneurs around the world, Slovenian Global Business network.

None of these dreams would come true if I didn't find in my way people of character, persevering and hardworking, willing to work for good. My partners at Tecnowatt, our workers, classmates and so many others.

What we do is history. The question remains whether the foundations we plant will be strong enough for the future. Yes, knowledge is important, but the values we work with are those that remain and develop a society. Thank you Minas, thank you Brazil and I'm sure Brazil will be even better in the next 66 years.
